How to accept donations on Square Online (Weebly)

Square gives you two built-in ways to take donations, a Donation item on your site and a donation payment link, and both run on Square's own payment processing.

Short answerCreate an item with the Donation item type and sell it on your Square Online site, or create a donation payment link (Accept a donation) that can be one-time or recurring and can show a goal. Both accept gifts of up to $5,000 and use Square's processing. Donor Merchant is a WordPress plugin and can't be installed on Square Online.

Is this the same as Weebly?

Yes, in practice. Square bought Weebly in 2018. Square's help center calls its builder Square Online and, in newer articles, Square Websites, and it points Weebly creators to a guide for moving from the Weebly builder to the Square one. The steps below use the Square Dashboard, which is where Square documents donations today.

Can I install Donor Merchant on Square Online?

No. Square Online is a hosted builder and WordPress plugins only run on WordPress. If Square's donation tools don't cover what you need, the route is a small WordPress donation site on a subdomain such as give.yourdomain.org, linked from your Square site. Check the built-in options first.

Option 1: a Donation item on your site

Square has several non-physical item types, and one of them is Donation, which Square describes as a way to "allow anyone to send donations for any cause of up to $5,000." Square lists it for Square Free, Plus and Premium subscribers.

  1. In Square Dashboard, go to Items & services (or Items & menus, or Items & inventory) > Items > Item library.
  2. Click Create item, open the Item type menu and choose Donation.
  3. Complete the details and click Save.
  4. Choose where non-physical items can be bought under Settings > Account & Settings > Fulfillment methods > Non-physical.

One gotcha from Square's docs: non-physical items have to be bought separately from items that ship or are picked up, so a donor can't add a gift to an order for a T-shirt in one checkout.

Option 2: a donation payment link

Payment links need no website at all, and there is no monthly fee for them, only the processing fee on each gift. In Square Dashboard, go to Payments & orders (or Payments & invoices, or Payments) > Payment links > Payment links, click Create link, choose Accept a donation and click Continue. You can then set:

  • a title, an optional description and image, and a Frequency: one-time or recurring;
  • Set donation goal, with an amount and a deadline;
  • Custom fields, up to two, for extra information from donors;
  • Redirect to a website after checkout, for example back to a thank-you page on your site.

Square lets you share the link as a plain link, a QR code or a buy button, among other options. For a site built with Square, the simplest move is a button that links to the payment link.

What does Square charge?

Square doesn't add a separate donation fee. You pay the online card rate for your Square plan, as published in October 2026:

Square planMonthly feeOnline card payments
Square Free$03.3% + 30¢
Square Plus$49 per location2.9% + 30¢
Square Premium$149 per location2.9% + 30¢

A $100 online gift costs $3.60 in fees on Square Free and $3.20 on Plus or Premium. Cards issued outside the US add 1.5%. Check Square's fee page before you decide, since rates and plan names change.

When are Square's tools enough?

They are a good fit if you already use Square to take payments at events, in a shop or at a church welcome table. Online and in-person gifts then land in one Square account with one set of reports and one payout. A donation payment link with a goal is a quick way to run a short appeal, and the recurring frequency covers monthly supporters. For a small group taking a modest number of gifts, that may be all you ever need.

When does a WordPress donation page make sense?

  • Donor records and statements. Donor Merchant keeps a history per donor with printable receipts and annual statements, which donors can open from a donor portal reached through an emailed sign-in link. Monthly donors giving through Stripe can update their card or cancel there.
  • A fuller form. Fee recovery, tributes, designations to funds, an employer matching question, and custom fields beyond two.
  • Campaigns with goal thermometers you can place on any page.
  • Offline gifts recorded with online ones, and Gift Aid for UK charities.
  • Gifts above $5,000 online, which Square's donation link and item don't accept.

Weigh one trade-off before you switch: Donor Merchant works with Stripe and PayPal, not Square. If you keep Square for in-person giving, you would have two payment accounts to reconcile.

How do I link Square Online to a WordPress donation page?

  1. Set up WordPress on a subdomain. Any host with WordPress 6.2 or later, PHP 7.4 or later and HTTPS works. Install Donor Merchant from Plugins > Add New, connect Stripe or PayPal (getting started), and add the Donation Form block or [donor_merchant] to a page.
  2. Add one DNS record. Add one record named give (full walkthrough). If your domain is managed by Square, go to Channels > Domains in Square Dashboard, select Manage > Manage domain, and under DNS Records select Add DNS record. Add the A record or CNAME record your host gives you, with give as the name. Square's article on this applies to Square Plus and Premium subscribers. Square warns that changing nameservers takes your website and domain email offline, so add a record and leave the nameservers alone. Changes can take 24 to 48 hours.
  3. Add a Donate link to the menu. In Square Dashboard, go to Channels > Square Online, click Website > Edit Site, select the header, and choose Edit links to add a navigation link. Pick the option for a link to an outside web address and paste your donation page URL.
  4. Match the look. Copy the hex code of your Square site's button color into Donor Merchant > Settings > Forms > Form style as a custom color, and choose the closest button shape. Use the same logo on both sites.
  5. Set up webhooks and test. Recurring renewals depend on webhooks. Make a test gift in Stripe's test mode first.

Can I embed the WordPress form on my Square site?

Square Online has an Embed code section for Square Plus and Premium subscribers (+Add > Section > Embed code), and Square says it can't help with custom code. We recommend a link rather than an embedded donation form. In a frame, Apple Pay needs the frame to be allowed to request payment and the domain to be registered, PayPal opens popups, and Safari blocks third-party cookies inside frames by default. We don't promise an embed will work for every donor.

Checked against Square's Support Center and pricing pages in October 2026. Square renames menus from time to time, as the alternatives above show; if a label differs in yours, look for the equivalent.
